There are less than 300 operating drive-in movie theaters left in the United States and one of them — the Sunset Drive In — is in Erie County in nearby Waterford Township at 808 Route 97. The theater operates every weekend from May through September and shows double features of two new-release (in theaters now) movies.
So, if you’ve ever wanted to experience a slice of retro Americana, this is your chance to fill the car with blankets and pillows, toss in some camp chairs, and take a trip back in time, all while enjoying all the conveniences of modern times, like sound coming through your car stereo (tune into 99.1 FM) instead of those rickety old speaker boxes you used to have to hang on the window of your car.
One modern convenience they don’t embrace at the Sunset Drive In? Credit cards. Take cash because they don’t take cards (and who can blame them with credit card processing fees taking a big bite out of small businesses?).
Admission is $10 for ages 12 and up, $5 for ages 7 through 11, free for those 6 and under.
Why go to a drive-in?
It’s like a tailgate party meets movie night, and it’s downright magical. At the drive-in, you’re the master of your movie-watching domain. Plus, there’s something undeniably charming about watching a flick on a giant outdoor screen while munching on popcorn straight from the comfort of your car.
Here are some pro tips to ensure your drive-in experience is a good one:
See what’s playing: Check Sunset’s Facebook page on Monday to see what is playing the coming weekend.
Arrive early: Just like scoring front-row seats at a concert, arriving early gives you prime real estate for parking. The lot at Sunset can fit 150 cars each night. They often sell out.
Bring (or buy) snacks. One of the great things about the drive-in is that this is one theater that lets you bring your own popcorn, candy, and soda. That said, check out the snack bar. They just might have something you’ll enjoy and proceeds support the facility, of course.
Don’t forget creature comforts: Think blankets, pillows, and maybe even some camp chairs if you want to sit outside. Oh, and don’t forget bug spray. You will need it.
Check the weather: Sunset will not issue refunds. They will, however “show movies rain, sleet, hail, tornado, and zombie apocalypse,” according to their Facebook page.
Leave your pets at home. Dogs are not permitted at Sunset Drive-In. Service animals are.
Batten down the hatch. If you are watching the movie with your hatchback up, you’ll be asked to tie it down to roof level so you don’t obscure the view for others. String is available at projection room door.
Mind your manners: Remember, you’re sharing this outdoor oasis with fellow movie buffs. Keep noise to a minimum, dispose of your trash properly, and be respectful of others’ viewing experience. It’s all about spreading good vibes.
So, there you have it, folks. The lowdown on why hitting up one of the last remaining drive-in movie theaters in the U.S. is worth a weekend night. Grab your car keys, round up your crew, and get ready for a movie night like no other.
